DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays were used to investigate the nano encapsulation effect on antioxidant potential. CE and EPG stability were evaluated at 25 ◦C and 5 ◦C, with and without light (1600 lx) for 60 days, determining the β-carotene concentration by UHPLC and antioxidant po tential by ABTS. The antioxidant potential of carotenoids increased after nanoencapsulation (57–59%). After 60 days, there was low retention of β-carotene (0–43.6%) in the CE, mainly at 25 ◦C light (0.00%) and dark (10.0%), and total loss of activity in the four conditions. EPG preserved the β-carotene concentration in the dark at 25 ◦C (99.0%) and in the light (83.1%) and dark (99.0%) at 5 ◦C, maintaining the antioxidant potential (68.7–48.3%). Therefore, EPG enhanced and stabilized the antioxidant potential of carotenoids, beneficial to human health.Artigo Chitooligosaccharides antagonize the cytotoxic effect of glucosamine(Springer, 2012-10-02) Santos, Everaldo Silvino dos; Assis, Cristiane Fernandes de; Costa, Leandro Silva; Melo-Silveira, Raniere Fagundes; Oliveira, Ruth Medeiros; Pagnoncelli, Maria Giovana Binder; Rocha, Hugo Alexandre Oliveira; Macedo, Gorete Ribeiro deChitooligosaccharides (COS) are partially hydrolyzed compounds derived from chitosan that exhibit a number of biological activities, including antitumor, antibacterial and antifungal properties. In this work, we examined the cytotoxicity of pure COS and oligomers A, B and C (solutions composed of different amounts of COS) produced by enzymatic hydrolysis using a crude enzyme extract produced by the fungus Metarhrizium anisopliae. The antiproliferative effect of these molecules was analyzed using tumor cell lines (HepG2 and HeLa cells) and in a normal cell line (3T3). The antioxidant activity was analyzed in several in vitro experiments. Glucosamine showed higher toxicity (approximately 92%) to all cell lines studied. However, the oligomers obtained after hydrolysis demonstrated no toxic effects on the normal cells (3T3). Furthermore, we showed that a small amount of other COS can decrease the cytotoxic effect of glucosamine against 3T3 cells, indicating that glucosamine could be used as an antitumor drug in the presence of other COS. In addition, different effects were found in antiproliferative assays, which depended on the COS composition in the oligomers (A, B and C), showing that a combination of them may be essential for developing antineoplastic drugs. Superoxide anion scavenging was the main antioxidant activity demonstrated by the COS and oligomers. This activity was also dependent on the oligomer composition of the chitosan hydrolysates. Further work will identify the ideal proportions of COS and glucosamine for maximizing the effects of these biological activitiesArtigo Effects of Purified Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1→3)-β-Glucan on Venous Ulcer Healing(2012) Medeiros, Sarah Dantas Viana; Cordeiro, Sara Lima; Cavalcanti, Jéssica Escorel Chaves; Melchuna, Karina Mendes; Lima, Aleida Maria da Silva; Araújo Filho, Irami; Medeiros, Aldo Cunha; Rocha, Keyla Borges Ferreira; Oliveira, Elizabeth Maia; Faria, Eduardo Dantas Baptista; Sassaki, Guilherme Lanzi; Rocha, Hugo Alexandre Oliveira; Sales, Valéria Soraya FariasArtigo Effects of Purified Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1→3)-β-Glucan on Venous Ulcer Healing(2012-07-02) Medeiros, Sarah Dantas Viana; Cordeiro, Sara Lima; Cavalcanti, Jéssica Escorel Chaves; Melchuna, Karina Mendes; Lima, Aleida Maria da Silva; Araújo Filho, Irami; Medeiros, Aldo Cunha; Rocha, Keyla Borges Ferreira; Oliveira, Elizabeth Maia; Faria, Eduardo Dantas Baptista; Sassaki, Guilherme Lanzi; Rocha, Hugo Alexandre Oliveira; Sales, Valéria Soraya FariasArtigo Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome according to different criteria in the male population during the Blue November Campaign in Natal, RN, Northeastern Brazil(Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome And Obesity, 2018) Medeiros, Paulo José de; Espósito, Regina Carmen; Silva, Fernando de Souza; Oliveira, Antonio Gouveia; Aragão, Cícero Flávio Soares; Rocha, Hugo Alexandre Oliveira; Moreira, Sueli Aparecida; Sales, Valéria Soraya de FariasBackground: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an aggregation of risk factors associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and all-cause mortality. Information on MetS prevalence is scarce in the northeast region, Brazil. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of MetS according to different diagnostic criteria in a community sample of men during the November Blue Campaign living in the metropolitan area of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study on 500 men aged 40 years or older invited by the Blue November Campaign of 2015, an awareness program aimed at the prevention of male diseases. The evaluation included blood pressure, anthropometric measurements (weight, height, and waist circumference), fasting blood glucose, and blood lipid profile. The diagnosis of MetS was made according to the criteria of International Diabetes Federation (IDF)/American Heart Association (AHA)/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), IDF, and National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII). Results: The prevalence was high by considering the following three criteria: IDF/AHA/NHLBI (66.8%), IDF (60.0%), and NCEP-ATPIII (46.4%). Concordance between diagnostic criteria measured by the kappa statistic (k) was excellent between IDF/AHA/NHLBI and IDF (k=0.85, P<0.0001) and moderate between IDF/AHA/NHLBI and NCEP-ATPIII (k=0.59) and IDF and NCEP-ATPIII (k=0.54). Conclusion: Prevalence of MetS in the male population was high using the three diagnostic criteria. IDF/AHA/NHLBI and IDF criteria have a high level of agreement, but NCEP-ATPIII criteria identify a lower number of MetS cases.
