Uma pausa antes do fim: aspectos do tempo em “a visit from the goon squad”

Abstract

This research studies the time as an analytical category in the work A visit from the goon squad, written by the North American writer Jennifer Egan. That work became an object of research by bringing in its prose modern features while dialogue with tradition, focusing on time as prominent element and using this category to portray the individual and the society that surrounds it. For the analysis, it is mainly used to theorizing about the time taken by Ricoeur (2010) and Meyerhoff (1976). We also have used Bauman (2001) to consider the effects of time in the lives of the characters. To talk about the object of study five themes were elected (‘The ragged narrative and your heels in time’; ‘Chronos and the lion’; ‘Pauses and music in the narrative’;‘Time seen as cruel entity and as redeeming’ and ‘After pause’) in which thirteen chapters work are represented. Philosophical voices were intersected in order to enables us to see how the author brings to his work the idea that the man believes that time, itself, is blamed for act of intimidate or overhaul each individual. It was also taken into account the relationships that Egan sets with Western literary tradition through the use of time category in his work and interface between society and literature.
