| Abstract | Steam injection is one of the main alternatives economically viable and is widely used for heavy oil recovery. In this technique, the temperature of the fluids, and consequently that of the reservoir, increases thus expanding of the metallic, which returns to its initial dimensions at the end of the injection cycle, generating stresses and cracks in the cement sheath. For this reason, the cement job must be designed to avoid future failure of the cement sheath due to thermal stresses. The present study focused on the formulation of dry mixtures with the addition of micronized polyurethane to improve their mechanical properties for cyclic injection, i. e., increase in tensile strength and decrease in elastic modulus. Dry mixtures were formulated with up to 4% of micronized polyurethane in addition to cement. These samples were cured at temperatures of 38°C and 300ºC during 1 and 7 days, respectively. The latter were cured under pressure of 2 kpsi. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting pastes were characterized. The results showed that the micronized polyurethane had good adherence to the cement matrix, which provided gain in compressive strength and tensile strength of slurries subjected to thermal cycling at 300°C for 7 days. The best results were obtained upon adding 2% of micronized polyurethane, which presented tensile strength of 8.68 MPa, whereas that of the standard slurry 7.24 MPa. The elasticity modulus of slurries with micronized PU were also adequate, as they decreased from 13.1 GPa for the standard slurry to 11.8 GPa for the slurry with 2% micronized PU. Therefore, the addition of 2% of us, the most suitable pastes for steam injection were those with 2% of micronized polyurethane improved the mechanical properties of cement slurries yielding better resistence to steam injection conditions. | |
