Dreams are manifestations of the dreamer's subconscious that present a diversity of repertoires, scenarios, characters and situations. Its complexity can be seen even in the various facets that the dream has acquired throughout History. From a vehicle of communication with the gods to a mechanism for promoting repressed desires, dreams always attract the attention of human beings. In recent decades, however, this curiosity about dream activities has gained greater focus from sciences, moving away, above all, from the mystical view. From this perspective, the present work aimed to discuss the behavior in question from the perspective of Tinbergen's four questions, analyzing the phenomenon from proximal and distal perspectives. In the human species, imaginary dreams are formulated from early childhood, becoming potentiated throughout life based on experiences and neural maturation. Dreaming occurs during sleep, especially in the REM phase, a paradoxical physiological state that presents intense cortical activation and muscle atony. Widely described in mammals, nocturnal daydreams seem to predate the group explosion following the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. In addition to their contributions to the learning process, recent research suggests another important function of oneiric activities: simulating future challenges based on experiences acquired in the past.
