Methods: an ecological study that used information from the Hospitalization Information System. The mortality rate, permanence and expenditures resulting from admissions in the period from 2008 to 2016 were analyzed according to residence, age and sex. Results: the greatest proportions of hospitalizations were bacterial pneumonias (19.92%) and gastroenteritis (17.52%). Illnesses that could be prevented by immunization had the highest average stay (on average 17 days); The highest admission rates were male (44.53 cases/1000 inhabitants) and for the age group over 80 (89.65 cases/1000 inhabitants), both in the period 2008-2010. In the period 2014-2016, the number of ICSAP corresponded to 30.90% of all hospitalizations and 16.36% of hospitalization expenses of the state. The hospitalization cost average for ICSAP was R$ 970.54, during the same three-year period.
