Objective: to analyze the reasons that led people with hepatitis C to abandon outpatient follow-up, at the Liver Study Center, from May 1995 to December 2017. Methods: this is a descriptive qualitative study based on the Convergent Care Research. The first step in data gathering was charts’ analysis to select people diagnosed with hepatitis C who did not attend the schedule appointments for more than six months in the time period of May 1995 to December 2017. The second step was a semi-structured interview with people with hepatitis C, who accepted to participate in the study, after being invited by phone call. At the same time, two Focal Groups were held; the first with a multidisciplinary team: nursing staff and receptionists of the Liver Study Center, medical archive staff, Statistics Service staff, and a chief nurse representing the administration. The second focus group included physicians who assist people with hepatitis C. The two focus groups addressed the problem related to the difficulty of outpatient follow-up of people with hepatitis C. To interpret the information, the following steps were executed, according the proposed Convergent Care Research by Paim; Trentini (2014), Minayo thematic analysis (2013) and Atlas ti software. Final considerations: the study identified the profile of people who abandoned specialized outpatient follow-up in viral hepatitis, listed the main reasons for patient to not attend the appointment, which raised, in the medical team, concerns for people living with hepatitis C. In this way, together with the multiprofessional team, a line of hepatitis C care at the Onofre Lopes Teaching Hospital.
