Sometimes, OC is preceded by lesions with an increased risk of suffering malignancy, the so-called oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). The prognosis of OC is poor and is mainly associated with detection in advanced stages, which reinforces the need for actions aimed at prevention and early diagnosis of the disease. In this context, the extension project “Sorria Sem Medo”, of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) stands out, which carries out activities with the purpose of sharing valuable information about oral cancer and OPMDs, in addition to the active search for these injuries in different areas of society. Aim: To determine the frequency of malignant and potentially malignant oral disorders in a Stomatology Service in Rio Grande do Norte (RN) for a period of ten years and its association with dissemination actions as a part of the university extension project. Methodology: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study carried out from the medical records of patients diagnosed with OC and OPMDs between 2010 and 2019. Sociodemographic, clinical and origin data were collected in order to relate to the impact of the project on the prevalence of these lesions. Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were applied to the studied variables adopting a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05). Results: In total, 510 OPMDs and 159 malignant neoplasms were diagnosed, of which actinic cheilitis (42.5%) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (86.8%) were the most common, respectively. OPMDs were more prevalent in women (77.1%) aged < 60 years (82.7%), white (81.7%) and pheoderm (76.5%). Most of the recurrent malignant neoplasms ocurred in men (24.6%) aged ≥ 60 years (31.7%) and black (23.5%). There was an increase in the frequency of clinical diagnoses of OC and OPMDs between 2016 and 2019 (56.1%) compared to the period from 2010 to 2015 (43.9%). More significant increase were observed after the initiation of actions for cases clinically identified as OPMDs (54.1%) and for those whose patients came from the countryside (64.5%) (p≤0.05). Conclusions: The extension project “Sorria Sem Medo” had a positive impact on the screening of oral cancer and precursor lesions, expanding the access of the population in the interior of the state of RN to the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/relações comunidade-instituiçãodiagnóstico clíniconeoplasias bucaiscommunity-institutional relationsclinical diagnosismouth neoplasmsAnálise do impacto de uma ação extensionista sobre a frequência de desordens orais malignas e potencialmente malignas em um Serviço de Estomatologia do Rio Grande do NorteAnalysis of the impact of an extension action on the frequency of malignant and potentially malignant oral disorders in a Stomatology Service in Rio Grande do NortebachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE::ODONTOLOGIA
