The internship is a mandatory part of the Pedagogy course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), providing practical experience of teaching with young children. It was possible to reflect on the process experienced, in order to establish, through theory and practice, an understanding of playful teaching materials and their contributions to development and learning in early childhood education, as well as how to use them in the classroom. The reflection on the practice made it possible to understand that the internship experience needs to be planned and developed based on the curricular guidelines of the area, such as the BNCC, respecting the function of early childhood education and the ways in which children are and exist in the world. It is believed that playfulness plays a fundamental role in the development, autonomy and learning of children, and that games and play are essential in this process.
