Methods: Thiswas a descriptive and quantitative study using secondarydata from the Information System on Live Births (Sistema deInformações sobre Nascidos Vivos, SINASC). The dataaddressed occurrences of congenital malformations innewborns from Rio Grande do Norte state from 2004 to 2011.A descriptive analysis of sociodemographic, maternal andhealth care variables was carried out and the thematic mapwas constructed. Results and Conclusions: CMs wereobserved in 2,305 (0.58%) NBs, and prevailed among singlemothers (61.41%), aged from 20 to 24 years old (27.24%),having 8-11 years of schooling (40.24%), who had had morethan 7 prenatal consultations (42.75%) and had given birthafter 37-41 weeks of pregnancy (74.1%). Themusculoskeletal system was the most affected component(24.97%), followed by congenital deformities of feet (20%)and other malformations of the nervous system (13.16%).This study describes the epidemiological characteristics ofcongenital malformations in newborns and may be useful foraction planning.
