Alongside this aspect, it is necessary to acknowledge alternatives ways to oportunize teaching and learning by means of information acess and knowledge creation. Thus is necessary to minimize minimize temporal and geographic limitations on behalf of users. This work aims analyze the role of the academic library in order to support to the Distance Education system. This is done through a case study realized at the Sebastião Názaro do Nascimento Library at Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) in Natal-Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. The work specifically aims to produce a literature review regarding concepts, characteristics, models and critical evaluations on Distance Education in Brazil. It also presents normative and legislative parameters that regulate this educational modality, products and services offered by the Library as well as identify the role of the librarian in this information unit. The methodology used was bibliographical and documental research of exploratory-descriptive nature. A qualitative research was done as well as a historical and monographic procedure was applied. Data collection was done through a case study and the application of the questionnaire with two librarians in the institute. Results indicate main products and services that are offered to users in the distance education of the institute as well as describe activities that were performed by librarians in this information unit. The research identifies the need to design new products and services targeted specifically to these users, distinct from the exclusively face-to-face profile with the application, especially and emphatically, of new digital technologies for a greater reach of users. It concludes by highlighting the importance of the study, and indicates suggestions to be implemented in the evaluated unit in order to contribute through the realized research.
