This event influences directly the socioeconomic development, mainly in the semi-arid regions of the northeast of Brazil. In this article, the standardized rainfall index (SPI) was applied to the time scale of 1 month, to identify the years of meteorological drought and its intensity in the three cities of the state of Rio Grande do Norte: Natal, Martins and Caicó. In addition, the results showed a similarity of the drought years between the three cities studied, showing that the droughts that reached the region since 1964 were well distributed in the State, however their effects were differentiated depending on the rainfall regime of the region.
