Repositório da UFRN.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/51899Objective: To understand the meanings attributed by family members to the diagnosis of chronic disease in children and adolescents. Method: integrative literature review in the databases: Virtual Health Library (VHL), Electronic Journals in Psychology (PEPSIC), Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). The searches were carried out in the second half of 2022, using the following inclusion criteria: Articles from the last 5 years - 2017 to 2022 -, in Portuguese, complete and available for free on research platforms. With the following descriptors from the Boolean operators AND and OR: Chronic Disease - Children, Chronic Disease - Children - Diagnosis, Chronic Disease - Children - Family, Chronic Disease - Adolescent - Family, Chronic Disease - Diagnosis - Adolescent. Data synthesis: of the 295 articles initially evaluated, 18 foster descriptive synthesis. The themes of the articles were grouped and presented in the discussion from 3 subtopics. Conclusion: the impact of chronic illness begins in the pre-diagnosis and in the family's trajectory in the health system. It brings change in the family and in the social environment and the need for readaptation. The path is exhausting and fragmented, it implies moral condemnation of the teams in relation to the family, demands from family members and disbelief in relation to the maternal role itself.
