The special concern with soil contamination by fuels is due to the difficulty in remediating this substrate and possible contamination of groundwater. This raises awareness especially in Rio Grande do Norte’s capital region, where about 70% of water consumption comes from aquifers. This work aimed at evaluating the behavior of the concentration of hydrocarbons in soil samples of Rio Grande do Norte when there is direct spillage of commercial gasoline and how it varies with time. For this, samples (3g) of five types of local soil were inserted into vials, contaminated with commercial gasoline (200 µL) and analyzed via Headspace-GC-FID (Shimadzu GC 2010). For each soil, eight samples were contaminated in order to obtain results in subsequent periods of 24 hours. The samples were left open at room temperature, being sealed only at the time of each analysis. The data obtained showed that the hydrocarbon concentration decay profile with time can be given by an exponential decay model-type y = y0 + α e-x/β, where y is the total area under the peaks, proportional to total concentration, and x is the time. R² values were greater than 0.99. The fit with data from all soil samples provided single parameter values, resulting in the equation y = 2.82 x 106 + 1.77 x 108 e-x/12.36 (R² = 0.98). Thermogravimetric results showed that the organic composition of the soil had a maximum value of 3.8% and a maximum moisture content of 1.0%.
