The growing demand for skilled labor has placed Higher Education in a showcase, and globalization encourages competition, which is the principle of meritocracy. This, however, excludes the influence caused by external agents. The objective of this research is to analyze both the performance of the candidates who have taken the ENEM (National High School Exam) in 2015 and were accepted to UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte) in 2016, and their respective academic performance, by the end of the second term of the 2016 school year. Moreover, in this context, we intend to investigate the existence of some relation between these performances and a certain set of socioeconomic variables. In order to meet these objectives, we first applied the Statistical Analysis technique, namely the Ward method, through the undergraduate courses offered by UFRN in this term, they were divided into subgroups according to their respective performance in the aforementioned exam. Subsequently, Exploratory Analysis techniques, specifically Boxplots and Bar Graphs, were used to relate the subgroups of academic courses with the socioeconomic variables. The results showed that the grouping allowed to know better certain characteristics related to the subgroups of lower performances, so that, although they presented similar medians in general performance, one subgroup presented good performance in mathematics and poor performance in writing, while another one presented an inverse relation. In addition, the exploratory analysis of the data allowed us to visualize the influence of the socioeconomic variables on the performance of the candidates, making it possible to understand that the dispute for a place in Higher Education is, in a way, unfair. Therefore, one cannot speak in meritocracy but in privileges, hence the need for public policies that allow a fairer competition is undeniable.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Desempenho no ENEMDesempenho AcadêmicoAnálise Exploratória de DadosMétodo de WardMeritocraciaPerformance in the ENEMAcademic achievementExploratory Analysis of DataWard's methodMeritocracyAnálise de desempenho no ENEM: um estudo com ingressantes na UFRN em 2016bachelorThesisEstatísticaFundamentos da EstatísticaAnálise MultivariadaAnálise de Dados
