In this perspective, the Vivência Integrada a Comunidade (VIC) of the Escola Multicampi de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (Caicó/RN) has provided immersion in the reality of health networks since the initial years of the medical course. Thus, the student learns through living in the territory/community to identify problems and reflect on improving basic health care. Thus, one of the problems identified by the medical student during VIC was the lack of knowledge of humanized care through doulas in the city of Caicó (RN), in the backlands of Rio Grande do Norte, as a strategy for good obstetric practices. Therefore, this article aims to report the experience of a medical student at a hospital in the Brazilian hinterland, providing a link between the university and its social function. With the report presented, it is expected to encourage and demystify the existence of the birth plan and the presence of the doula, so that they become an effective strategy for reducing risk interventions in pregnant women.
