Methods: The sample was selected conveniently and non probabilistically. Thirty adults, aged 19 to 59, and 30 elderly individuals aged 60 or older participated in the study. They could be of any educational level, gender, and had to have resided in Rio Grande do Norte for more than 10 years without a history of neurological or psychiatric illness. During data collection, participants underwent: 1) reading and signing of the informed consent form; 2) responding to the sample characterization instrument to obtain sociodemographic data and eligibility criteria; 3) cognitive screening tests, geriatric depression, and activities of daily living dependence assessment; 4) performance of speech fluency tests with semantic, phonemic, and free criteria. Data were statistically analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Mann-Whitney test and Pearson correlation, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: Adults scored higher than the elderly in all verbal fluency tests. The comparison of subgroups considering gender and age showed a statistical difference in all tests between adult and elderly women. There was a negative correlation between age and participants' performance in semantic (p<0.001), phonological (p<0.001), and free (p<0.001) verbal fluency tests. Conclusion: In the Rio Grande do Norte sample, higher age was associated with poorer performance in verbal fluency.
