Its source is located in Macaíba and it flows through the city of Parnamirim. The stream's waters flowing to Taborda River, which then flows into Pirangi River. Nowadays, both its water quality and riparian forest are degraded. The Água Vermelha stream suffers with the replacement of native vegetation by urbanization and small agricultural properties, provoking significant impacts such as silting and pollution, which affects water quality, and also its fauna and flora. The objective of this study was to analyze land cover and land use at different distances from the stream (30m, 60m, 100m, 120m, 300m, 500m). A map was created with buffers around the Água Vermelha stream. The land cover classes were obtained from the 2022 “Mapbiomas” project. After analyzing the buffers, we observed that forest cover is replaced by urbanization and agriculture in higher distances. In the first 30m, 55.4% of the area is composed by forest, compared to 39% covered by urbanized and agricultural areas. In the 300m to 500m distance range, only 19.2% of the area is composed by forest, with 80.1% covered by urbanized and agricultural areas. We suggest that urgent actions are needed to restore the riparian forest and improve the water quality of the Água Vermelha stream.
