We seek to understand to what extent the messages contained in reggae music can be translated into elements of social awareness, education, self-affirmation and construction of a citizen spirit among listeners. The research was developed using communication theorists, such as Marlene Blois, Ivete Roldão, Artur Ferraretto and their ideas about Public Radio; in addition to educational theories, such as those of Paulo Freire, when they talk about inclusive and liberating education. We use important authors to talk about the history of reggae, such as Peter Dalton and Steve Barrow. We also work on an empirical front, producing, presenting and publicizing the program. We conclude, through theoretical studies and practical experience, that one of the fundamental elements required of a truly public radio station is the delivery of quality entertainment to listeners.
