This species is mainly used as forage for cattle and goats, in the recovery of degraded areas, and in folk medicine, it is used as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic. The species still lacks chemical and pharmacological studies and, knowing that it is rich in phenolic compounds, the present study aimed to verify the influence of seasonality on the content of total phenols and flavonoids in the hydroethanolic extract of the cladodes of Nopalea cochenillifera over a period of 12 months. Samples were collected monthly at the Rommel Mesquita de Faria Experimental Station, at the Agricultural Research Company of Rio Grande do Norte/SA – EMPARN, located in Parnamirim/RN. The cladodes were cut, oven-dried, crushed and subjected to maceration followed by remaceration with a solution of ethanol and water (7:3, v/v). Subsequently, the extract obtained was lyophilized. The total phenol and flavonoid content was evaluated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry, by the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride assays, both expressed in gallic acid equivalents (mg AG/g) and quercetin (mg EQ/g), respectively. The study of the phytochemical profile was performed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The results showed that seasonality did not significantly influence the total phenol content, but impacted the flavonoid content in the months of June (4.55 mg/g) and October (4.53 mg/g), since they presented higher values than the month of March (2.98 mg/g) (p<0.05). The variations were associated with factors such as sunlight, water stress and temperature. Regarding the phytochemical profile of the extracts, no qualitative change was observed in the TLC. Suggesting a reproducibility of the phytochemical composition in the studied period. The results of the present study suggest that seasonality did not influence the composition of phenols, while flavonoids showed significant variations, especially in specific months, and that no qualitative alteration of the extracts was observed by TLC analysis. The study reinforces the importance of understanding the effects of seasonality on the production of secondary metabolites, to ensure the quality of the raw material and consequently the efficacy and safety of products obtained with the species.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/CactaceaePalma miúdaFenólicosFlavonoidessazonalidadeCromatografia em camada delgadaSmall palmPhenolics,FlavonoidsSeasonalityThin layer chromatographyEfeito da sazonalidade no teor e no perfil cromatográfico de fenois e flavonoides do extrato hidroetanólico dos cladódios de Nopalea cochenilliferaEffect of seasonality on the content and chromatographic profile of phenols and flavonoids in the hydroethanolic extract of Nopalea cochenillifera cladodesbachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE
