Barragens, lugares e resistências: o processo de deslocamento da comunidade Barra de Santana, Jucurutu/RN. Orientador: Eugênia Maria Dantas. 2022. 153f. Dissertação (Mestrado em Geografia) - Centro de Ciências Humanas, Letras e Artes, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2022.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/49962The arrival of a dam project is imbued with contents that blend into a peculiar sociospatial context: the removal of a population from its place for the filling of the reservoir to be built. Within this scenario, the notions of territory, power, experience, and place gain relevance for the understanding of the ties that were built by these people with their space and the strategies that were outlined, by the collective, in the struggle for rights. The objective of this paper is to discuss the construction of the Oiticica Dam and the dynamics of the struggles implemented by the community of Barra de Santana in the municipality of Jucurutu - Rio Grande do Norte. In this endeavor, the ideas of Bonnemaison and Cambrezy (1996), Dardel (2015), Raffestin (1980) and Relph (1976) support the reading of the phenomenon through a geographical perspective. The works of Germani (1982), Sigaud (1986, 1986) and Vainer and Araújo (1990) have been established as basic references for accessing relevant content in the analysis of dam construction at the national level. What has already been studied on community resettlement processes shows the lack of commitment of those responsible for the works with human rights and environmental legislation. Driven by the discourse of economic progress, dam projects nurture the hopes of the affected populations with promises of improvement in their lives. However, in all historical moments, the places flooded by dams receive only the liabilities of the promised economic progress. The benefits are destined for other places, or are not thought of in a way that improves everyone's lives. Therefore, it is not possible to face the injustices that have already been committed and those that are still being imposed on the communities as inherent elements of the dam projects. In the specific context of Barra de Santana, the literature review, image research of the manifestations, interviews with the residents, and the elaboration of a mental-affective cartography made it possible to understand what was experienced by the residents between the years 2013 and 2022. By managing to take control of the narrative for themselves, the Barra de Santana residents fought for the necessary achievements for a more dignified resettlement and the certainty of having the destiny of their collective future in their own hands.
