This study is based on the importance of cosmetic safety and health parameters and aimed to analyze and quantify arsenic in black mascara. The quantification of this substance was compared to the maximum permitted values (VMP) of 3 µg/g, set out in RDC 44/2012 and reinforced by RDC 628/2022, of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Six brands of black mascara purchased in the city of Natal/RN were analyzed. Initially, the samples were pre-calcined and then mineralized at 650 ºC until ash was obtained. The ashes were incorporated into an acid solution in order to release arsine gas, which reacted with silver diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC-Ag) to form arsenic diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC-As). Finally, the DDC-As solutions obtained had their absorbance measured at 540 nm in a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. To obtain the results, an analytical curve was prepared on each day of sample analysis. The mascara samples showed 1.172; 1.066; 0.980; 1.010; 0.971 and 1.098 µg total arsenic/g sample. The six brands of mascara analyzed had arsenic concentrations below the recommended VMP, and were therefore suitable for human use in terms of total arsenic contentArsênioMáscara de cíliosCosméticosToxicologiaArsenicEyelash mascaraCosmeticsToxicologyDeterminação de arsênio em máscara para cílios de coloração pretaDetermination of arsenic in black eyelash mascarabachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE
