This is an early warning system for prevention and control of risks of outbreaks, epidemics, and other health problems based on information surveillance of the epidemiological situation in areas outside the national territory. The theoretical framework of event-based surveillance is presented, as well as the characteristics of the sources and automated systems that contribute to the collection and monitoring of information on health events. The four stages of the international epidemiological surveillance system are explained (search and collection of information, analysis and evaluation, organization, and dissemination of information) that results in information products and services.
