Specifically, we seek to observe what strategies the teacher uses for teaching reading; to understand how the teacher thinks the importance of working with the reading in Portuguese classes; to identify the main difficulties in working with reading in the classroom. This study was conducted in a public school, in the city of José da Penha – RN. Methodologically, this is a qualitative research, for which, notes were made about the observed classes. After the observations, a quiz was applied with the 6th grade class teacher of the referred school. For this, our research was based on studies of authors such as: Lajolo (2003), Solé (1998), Antunes (2003), Kleiman (2014), Koch and Elias (2007), Colomer (2002), Rocha (2012). Another important reference was the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Língua Portuguesa do Ensino Fundamental II (PCNs) [National Curriculum Parameters of the Portuguese Language in Fundamental School II]. These theorists bring fundamental reflections about the teaching of reading and the strategies for this matter.
