Investments in public safety do not bring a favorable result to guaranteeing safety for Brazilian citizens. Therefore, this work has as a general objective to analyze the efficiency of public security expenditures in the states of the Northeast region between the periods from 2017 to 2020. With this information, in order to achieve the objective, a research was carried out with bibliographic, documentary and descriptive procedures, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. Data were collected from the Brazilian Public Security Forum and the National Treasury Secretariat. The research analyzes changes in public security spending and crime indicators, using Intentional Violent Deaths (IVD) rates. In the data analysis, the Pearson correlation test was applied, observing a weak and negligible interdependence to establish whether the volume of investments influences the fall or rise of the IVD indicators. The analysis with data on per capita expenditure serves as a reference of the efforts made and/or the efficiency of what has been done, however, it is clear that spending more is not enough to have better indicators of safety and reduction of violence; and despite the increase in public safety expenditures in recent years, this does not mean to claim that they are being well applied.
