A structured search was conducted in the CAPES Journals and Web of Science databases based on defined selection criteria. Out of the initially identified 21 studies, 11 articles, books, and monographs were selected for an critical analysis, considering metrics such as publication impact, authors' institutional affiliations, and experimental techniques employed. The selected works cover topics such as Visible Light Communications (VLC) and Ultraviolet Communications (UVLC), with a focus on aspects like physical and information security related to OWC. Results from the systematic review highlight significant achievements, along with challenges and research opportunities in areas such as advanced modulation systems, integration with 5G cellular networks, and optimized communication protocols.
