Among these approaches, the disposal of medical equipment has stood out amidst a profusion of problems and challenges increasingly encountered in management. A study on this disposal is justified primarily to prevent risks and damages that may affect society and the environment. In this context, the case of the linear accelerator in Goiânia in 1987 can be particularly highlighted. Due to non-compliance with technical safety standards, equipment containing radioactive material was dismantled in a scrapyard. The Cesium-137, a radioactive material contained in the linear accelerator, contaminated the population, causing severe damage to local health. Thus, this work presents a reflection on the main regulatory bodies and the most relevant technical standards regarding the disposal of such machines. Positioned as qualitative and bibliographic research, the study highlights excerpts from technical standards and regulations within the Brazilian context, emphasizing the need not only to showcase them but also to reflect on their content and areas for improvement.
