One source of data that makes it possible to estimate this indicator for the Brazilian population is the National Health Survey 2013, which is based on a stratified multi-stage cluster sample. Using data from this survey, this work seeks to test the hypothesis of independence between the self-reported health status and sociodemographic variables in the adult population of the Brazilian Northeast, in addition to describing these associations. The subsample analyzed covers approximately 19,419 private permanent households and 18,305 respondents. Applying independence tests incorporating the sampling plan structure, strong statistical evidence of self-reported health association was detected with the variables gender, age group, educational level and housing status and a moderate association between the health indicator and race. In general, it is observed that adult female residents, who are older, have no or lower education and reside in rural areas are associated with regular or poor or very poor health self-assessment.
