In this sense, surface engineering stands out with the application of surface films that allow improving the surface properties of metals, especially electrolytic plasma nitriding (NPE), which comprises several nitriding techniques in which nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a material. Therefore, in this work, we sought to investigate the effects of the NPE technique on D and M series tool steel samples in order to analyze the characteristics of the nitrided layers produced with different treatment parameters. For this purpose, samples of AISI tool steels D2, D6 and M2 were nitrided using an aqueous solution of urea (NH2)2CO (400 g/l) with ammonium chloride NH4Cl (20 g/l) and PEG1500 (10 g /l) at different treatment times, namely: 5 and 10 minutes in anodic and cathodic polarities. And in order to achieve the objectives of this work, after NPE, the samples were characterized in terms of surface and profile microhardness through Vickers microhardness tests. The topography of the coatings and their thickness were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The phase composition was identified by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and the surface roughness by the Ra parameter. The results obtained showed that the coatings produced by cathodic NPE showed good adhesion to the substrate and, in general, superior properties to those obtained by anodic NPE. When nitrided in cathodic polarity, the samples had a layer of compounds constituted by the nitrides ɛ-Fe2-3N, γ'-Fe4N and CrN, with surface microhardness superior to that of the substrate and whose average thickness increased with the treatment time. However, the surface roughness also increased. Despite this, the methodology used provides a practical and objective way to modify the surface of the tool steels (D and M series) and to obtain better surface properties for industrial applications.Acesso AbertoNitretação eletrolíticaAços-ferramentaEngenharia de superfícieNitretação eletrolítica a plasma de aços AISI M2, AISI D2 e AISI D6Plasma electrolytic nitriding of AISI M2, AISI D2 and AISI D6 steelsmasterThesisCNPQ::ENGENHARIAS::ENGENHARIA MECANICA
