Subtitling, in particular, allows people around the world to access a specific language. However, translation, especially when related to comedy, particularly puns, becomes a great challenge for translators, as it requires extralinguistic knowledge. In view of this, this research, which is quali-quantitative, descriptive and interpretative in nature, aims to analyze the effectiveness of the translation strategies used with puns present in the first season of the series Friends in relation to the preservation of meaning and humor. The research question is: In what ways are the strategies used in the translation of puns from English to Portuguese present in the subtitles of the first season of the series Friends effective in conveying the meaning and humor of the puns? To answer this question, we established the following specific objectives: (i) to identify the puns in the first season of Friends, as well as (ii) to classify and analyze them in terms of the translation strategies applied according to the proposal of contemporary theorist Dirk Delabastita and (iii) to evaluate the extent to which these translations maintain the original meaning of the puns in the Source Language (English), which potentially contribute to the humor of these puns in the Target Language (Portuguese). We rely on theorists such as Cintas and Remael (2014), Díaz-Cintas and Gunilla (2009), Delabastita (1994), Delabastita (1996) and Gan (2015) to discuss audiovisual translation, subtitling, puns and translation strategies. Alongside, we used some categories of our own authorship to assess the level of effectiveness in conveying humor in translations.
