However, during the process of pumping the cement slurry into the annular space, a pressure difference occurs which results in the aqueous phase of the slurry filtering through the rock formation, leaving only the solids behind. The objective of this work is the application of polymeric polystyrene nanoparticles as a chemical additive for the control of filtrate in cement pastes for application in oil wells. The tests were carried out simulating a vertical well with 1700m of depth and geothermal gradient of 1.50°F/100 feet. Pastes with a specific mass of 15.8 lb/gal were formulated using class G Portland cement with nanolatex concentrations ranging from 0 to 2.0 gpc. API filtration, rheology, thickening time and stability tests were performed. The obtained results show that nanolatex is a highly efficient additive in the control of cement paste filtrate. Another significant result was the reduction in setting time, which can be attributed to the greater stability provided by the nanolatex to the cementitious system.
