Our extension project referring to the national thyroid "D" Day campaign, aimed to carry out a study with individuals from the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) in order to do a population screening so that we could observe the percentage of people who had thyroid-related problems and thus, raise awareness of the population, showing the importance of an early diagnosis for a good prognosis of thyroid dysfunctions. The prevalence of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in a group of 431 volunteers from the Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes (HUOL) was analyzed. main thyroid hormones (TSH and free T4), facilitating access to these laboratory tests for patients. In the population studied, 92.8% were female and there was a higher prevalence of diagnosis of patients with hypothyroidism. In the female group (n = 400), the prevalence of thyroid diseases (21.25%) was similar when compared to the prevalence (29.03%) in the male group (n = 31). In the survey carried out through the campaign, almost 22% (n = 94) had hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. In conclusion, the prevalence of patients with thyroid dysfunction observed in the thyroid “D” day campaign is high and this fact may be linked to numerous factors of genetic and/or environmental origin, demonstrating the importance of carrying out future studies. Therefore, monitoring through hormonal dosages deserves attention, since once diagnosed, the patient should start the correct treatment as soon as possible, and periodically carry out medical follow-up and laboratory tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.Disfunções tireoidianasTireoideHipotireoidismoHipertireoidismoHormônios da tireoideThyroid dysfunctionsThyroidHypothyroidismHyperthyroidismThyroid hormonesPrevalência de alterações nos hormônios tireoidianos no grupo de pacientes recrutados em um hospital do Rio Grande do NortePrevalence of changes in thyroid hormones in the group of patients recruited in a hospital in Rio Grande do NortebachelorThesis
