They have been part of the terrestrial fauna for a long time, being the most ancient hexapods being found in the fossil record. There are approximately 9400 extant species of springtails described so far, distributed in four orders: Entomobryomorpha, Poduromorpha, Symphypleona and Neelipleona. Poduromorpha is characterized by visible trunk segmentation, protergite with chaetae and usually short appendages. Hypogastruridae Börner, 1906 is the second largest family within this order with about 740 species distributed in 42 genera, including Hypogastrura Bourlet, 1839, which holds 176 described species and have a cosmopolitan distribution. So far 18 species of Hypogastrura are recorded in the Neotropical Region. Among them, only two were registered in Brazil. This study aimed to survey the diagnoses of the species of Hypogastrura from the Neotropical Region and describe a new Brazilian species, in order to enrich the taxonomic data of Collembola in the area. A comparative table was also provided for the Neotropical species. Hypogastrura sp. nov., collected from Rio Grande do Sul state, has the antenomere IV with 10 subcylindrical sensilla and the microsensillum, the post-antennal organ with 4 vesicles, dorsal head a0 cheta present, m2 chaeta on Th. II present, collophore with 4+4 setae, tenaculum with 4+4 teeth, well developed furca, dens with 7+7 setae, spoon-shaped mucro, with an external lamella and robust anal spines inserted into anal papillae.
