With an impressive diversity of 65 species, 2 subspecies, and 14 natural hybrids, these palm trees are found throughout the territory of South America, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. One of the most notable characteristics of the Syagrus genus is its versatility and ability to survive in extremely dry conditions. This makes them a popular choice among local communities for exploratory and ornamental activities. Furthermore, Syagrus palms are known for producing fruits that have multiple uses. The fruit is often mentioned as a food resource for both humans and animals, whether domestic or wild. The edible parts of the fruit include the kernel and mesocarp, which are rich in antioxidant compounds such as phenolics, vitamins, carotenoids, and minerals. These antioxidant compounds confer beneficial health properties to Syagrus fruits. Studies have shown that they have antibacterial, antibiofilm, antiparasitic, antioxidant, prebiotic, antiulcerogenic, anticholinesterase, and hypoglycemic activities. It is important to note that even at high concentrations, no evidence of genotoxic or mutagenic activities has been found in Syagrus fruits. Therefore, their consumption does not cause harmful effects on health.Attribution 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/br/Frutos nativosComposição nutricionalToxicidadeCompostos BioativosFrutos do gênero Syagrus: uma perspectiva narrativa sobre suas propriedades biológicasFruits of the Syagrus genus: a narrative perspective on their biological propertiesbachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS
