Among the various wastewaters generated in the petroleum industry, are the waters of production which are complex mixtures of inorganic and organic materials, suspended and dissolved. Among the contaminants are the heavy metals and oil, whose concentration in these effluents may exceed the limits allowed by environmental legislation. This work investigate the process of isolation of fatty acids from natural coconut oil and the process of complexation of heavy metals into waters of production using coconut oil as complexant agent. In this context, it was made a systematic study of extraction of heavy metals and oil simultaneously. The behavior of complexation and separation was evaluated using both separation funnels and laboratory prototype of a mixer-settler based on inversion phases (MDIF). The best efficiency of extraction percentages obtained were 83.5% for Cd, 77% for Pb, 65% for Ni and 84% for oil.
