A prominent example of contemporary Brazilian symphonic music, the concerto incorporates multiple rhythms typical of AfroBrazilian culture, which will be analyzed in detail to help us elucidate the ‘Black’ character of the oeuvre. This study includes a personal account of the challenges faced during the score preparation and analysis of the musical text considering that lack of reference recordings. Additionally, the research presents a new reduced version made of the orchestral work for a smaller ensemble: trumpet, piano, and ad libitum percussion. We will explain the criteria used to adapt the orchestral context for this reduced instrumentation.
