In health care settings, nursing accounts for the largest number of professionals in hospitals, being the workers who suffer most from inadequate working conditions, thus making absenteeism an important issue. The study aims to summarize the state of the art literature on absenteeism of nursing professionals working in hospitals in the last ten years. Integrative literature review study, developed in the period from June to July 2013 on the databases of Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Scopus, and PubMed. Five articles that met the criteria for inclusion in the study were identified and included. The absenteeism-related variables identified, according to the results of the scientific articles analyzed, were grouped in three categories, and were: characterization of the hospital, time off from work, and causes of absenteeism. The absenteeism-related variables identified refer to higher occurrence of absence from work by nursing technicians, and lower among nurses, due to several causes, but musculoskeletal and respiratory diseases are the most common. Moreover, it was observed that working conditions are a contributing element to abscence.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/AbsenteísmoEnfermagemSaúde do trabalhadorRecursos Humanos de EnfermagemTrabalhoQualidade de VidaSaúde MentalHospitais GeraisAbsenteeismNursingOccupational HealthNursing StaffAbsenteísmo de profissionais da enfermagem que trabalham na rede hospitalar: revisão integrativa da literaturaAbsenteeism of nursing professionals working in a hospital network: integrative review of the literaturearticle
