Dissertação (Mestrado em Música) - Escola de Música, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2023.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/52670The work presents an overview of the Potiguar (referring to the State of Rio Grande do Norte) choro and its connections to the seven-string guitar, addressing Potiguar choros in which this instrument is present, whether in melodic counterpoint, improvisation, obligatto bass, inversions and ornamentations, or as a solo instrument. It also aims to present and evaluate choro compositions and composers, as well as the seven-string and regional guitarists who recorded choros in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The Potiguar choro movement is, in short, wide ranging, from composers who are still unknow to others who are well recognized. In this work, compositions were chosen that present these composers and in which the seven-string guitar has a technical/musical lead, the study of witch can enrich the knowledge of the guitarist learning of choro. Many authors emphasize the value given to oral transmission in learning choro. However, oral transmission makes it difficult to accurately analyze the compositions and aspects related to style, melodic and musical form, aspects that are often lost due to the lack of transcriptions of contrapunral phrases. Thus, I stress the importance of written bass line better describe and understand music in the idiom of the seven-string guitar in Brazil.
