Infecções relacionadas a assistência à saúde em unidade de terapia intensiva adulto. Orientadora: Ana Elza Oliveira de Mendonça. 2024. 28p. Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação em Enfermagem)- Departamento de Enfermagem, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2024.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/61698Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infectious processes that occur after a patient has been admitted to a healthcare service, and can arise during hospitalisation or after discharge, related to hospitalisation or procedures carried out during this period. They are adverse events that require monitoring and control. In neonatal and adult intensive care units (ICUs), infection rates are two to three times higher in low-income countries and three to twenty times higher in middle-income countries when compared to high-income countries. Identifying the epidemiological profile of HAIs is an important factor in improving the quality of the service provided in hospitals. This study aims to characterise HAIs in patients admitted to the ICU between 2020 and 2022. A descriptive, retrospective study with a quantitative approach was carried out in the general ICU of a university hospital in north-eastern Brazil. Sociodemographic, epidemiological and treatment data were collected from the medical records of all patients aged 18 or over admitted to the general ICU between 2020 and 2022. They were analysed descriptively and presented in absolute and relative numbers, graphs and tables using the Epimed Monitor System®, the platform on which they are stored. The study was submitted for approval to the HUOL/UFRN Research Ethics Committee (CEP) under number 59991822.0.201.3.5292 and approved under opinion no. 6.169.186 and the national IMPACT MR study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the coordinating centre in November 2018 (approval 3.025.217). Of the 2,910 patients admitted to the ICU, 55.91 per cent were male. Ages ranged from 18 to 80 years, and the predominant age group was 45 to 80 years. The main comorbidities on admission were hypertension (67.49%), smoking (28.08%), diabetes (21.24%) and dyslipidaemias (15.91%). With regard to infections, 93.56% originated in the hospital environment with 3.8% from outside the institution and 3.8% from the community. The HAIs for the period were: airway-related: ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), with 20.17% and ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis (VAT) with 5.88%, totalling 31.05% of episodes directly related to the mechanical ventilation procedure. This was followed by infections of the genitourinary system, particularly UTI associated with catheter use (14.57%). The aim was to characterise HAIs in the adult ICU. These represent a risk to the quality of care and can result in serious complications. Despite advances in technology and clinical care, the implementation of effective preventive measures, antimicrobial resistance and lack of adherence to prevention protocols are major challenges. Therefore, to minimise the impact of HAIs, improve the quality of care and guarantee patient safety, it is recommended that improvement strategies be implemented, together with awareness-raising and constant training of professionals.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Assistência à saúdeSegurança do pacienteUnidades de Terapia IntensivaInfecção hospitalarInfecções relacionadas a assistência à saúde em unidade de terapia intensiva adultoHealthcare-associated infections in an adult intensive care unitbachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS
