The law 9,394/1996, known as the Law of Guidelines and Bases of education (LDB), modified by 10,639/2003 establishes the guidelines and bases for national education, to "be included in the official curriculum of the education network the obligation to subject Afro-Brazilian history and culture "which was also amended by law 11,645/2008, this law which adds in addition to Afro-Brazilian history and culture indigenous culture. The approval of these laws implies the need to address the subject in vogue to elementary and high school curricula of public and private schools across the country. In this context, we are looking for several questions in this research as the theme was discussed in textbooks of history of the Rio Grande before 2003 and after the enactment of the Act, since the textbook is still a widely used instrument between teachers and students in the teaching learning process. Our corpus of analysis consists of six books of the history of Rio Grande do Norte, both of elementary school I (comprising the 1º year 5º year), four of them published in 1984/1994, this period before the law comes into force, and two of them in 2011 and 2012, in the period that precedes the law 10,639/2003. Methodological support using qualitative method, for through the analyses we check how the theme was treated and if after the law she is contemplated. Thus we see that before the law, the history of Rio Grande do Norte already brought so superficial, silent or even hides the history and culture of Afro-descendants, showing only what was slavery, the ill-treatment to which Africans and their descendants were affected in its trajectory of life here in Brazil.
