The development of these systems faces significant challenges, with the robustness of the data communication network being a crucial aspect for efficient collaboration among the UAVs. This work is dedicated to specifying a data Reliable Transport Protocol, called RTP-FANET, for a communication network in a squadron of UAVs, focusing on scanning the rocket impact area over the sea in the SPACEVANT 2 project. The research covers the key characteristics of communication networks for multi-UAV systems, aerial ad hoc networks (FANETs), considering application specifics such as path planning, trajectory, and sensor data collection. Strategies are proposed for scanning the rocket impact area, analyzing the characteristics of networks most suitable for these strategies, and the RTP-FANET protocol is designed to be appropriate for the application. By integrating Xbee Pro 900HP S3B modules into a network architecture and a hardware platform controlled by embedded computer, we developed and implemented a test plan to evaluate the performance of the RTP-FANET protocol. Performance metrics include throughput, latency, and communication indicators among network nodes, such as packet retransmission, loss, as well as flow and congestion control.
