Santa Cruz, 2017.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/34787Introduction: Since ancient times the medicinal plants are frequently used, being an alternative in combats against infectious diseases, bypassing the bacterial resistance, besides the low cost. The plants are empirically used, with knowledge passed through generations, requiring scientific support to prove its efficacy. Objective: The study aims to analyze the popular use and antimicrobial property of Punica Granatum Linn extract against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp bacteria. Methodology: A questionnaire about the use of medicinal plants was applied with 205 costumers of a popular fair in a field research. An in vitro test was performed to determine the antimicrobial activity of the extract of the Punica Granatum Linn plant bark at different dilutions (15mg/ml, 31mg/ml, 62mg/ml, 125mg/ml, 250mg/ml). Subsequently, the analysis of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was performed, according to the measurement of the bacterial inhibition halos. Results: It was observed that 39% of the study population uses medicinal plants monthly. However, only 2.4% ask health professionals. In the in vitro analyzes, the extract of Punica Granatum Linn showed antimicrobial potential against microorganisms tested, with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) from 250mg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus and 31mg/ml for Streptococcus spp. Conclusion: It was observed that Punica Granatum Linn is constantly used for upper airways infections. Furthermore, it showed antimicrobial activity against the bacteria used in this study.
