Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study of ninety-one adults (51.6,4% women). Associated with a fishing colony located in a rural area in a municipality whose Human Development Index is equal to 0.608, located in the micro region of Borborema Potiguar, 82 kilometers from Natal - RN. For the collection of socioeconomic data, a specific form elaborated for this research was used, in addition to the short version of the Brazilian Scale of Food Insecurity. For the diagnosis of the nutritional status, a classification of the Body Mass Index was used, and to estimate cardiovascular risk was interpreted value of the waist circumference. Results: It was verified that 75% of the sample were beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família Program (PBF). They reported receiving less than a minimum wage 93% of individuals. As to the level of schooling, 60% still had not finished elementary school and 12% were illiterate. Most lived in houses with no infrastructure and basic sanitation. Approximately 55% of the interviewees were overweight, and 56% with cardiovascular risk. Although some foods (beans, fruits and fish) have reported per capita consumption higher than the average of the research with Brazilians in the country as a whole, protein consumption is inadequate for 68% of the sample. Conclusions: Although the majority of individuals are beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família Program, the prevalence of Food Insecurity is high.
