Understanding the historical dynamics between population and consumption in its fullness, requires the exploration of several areas of knowledge, particularly of the social sciences, because it is necessary to consider social, economic, historical, behavioural, ethical and value aspects. One way to capture this wide range of factors is to do an age-period-cohort (APC) analysis. The effects of age, represent the changes throughout the course of families life; period effects are associated with changes due to specific events over the years; and the cohort effects comprise the idea that the various social and economic contexts in which the generation has been submitted since birth can influence their values and behaviours. Electricity consumption in households, in particular, is a good way to embody the lifestyle of families and the ecological footprint of a population. The main objective of the research is to identify and understand the effects of age, period and cohort on household electricity consumption per capita in Brazil from the Household Budget Survey – HBS data of 2002- 2003, 2008-2009 and 2017-2018. To overcome the coefficients identification problem, linear regression models with different forms of restriction and the hierarchical model of mixed effects with two levels were used. As results, there was an increase in consumption as the household is headed by older people and between the periods analysed. In the cohort effect, it was verified that the cohorts born after 1960 showed a decline in the intensity of energy consumption in relation to the older cohorts. These results mean distinct impacts of the three-time dimensions and contribute to a better understanding of energy consumption behaviour within Brazilian households and how it has shaped over time, thus supporting environmental public policies and energy planning for better directions on actions and resources.
