With the constant increase in this age group, the attention of the scientific community has been intensified towards this field of study. This is due to the fact that decisions made by the government, or even the actions of these individuals, have direct effects on public health. The aging of society is an aspect that requires in-depth and continuous understanding in order to develop strategies to promote the well-being and quality of life of this significant portion of the population. Objective:To analyze the health-related lifestyle of elderly people working and retiring from a Public University. Method: Quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study on a part of a broader research called “Living conditions and health of elderly people: a cross-sectional study within the scope of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte” where the final sample of the study consisted of 171 individuals investigated, including assets and investors, with the collected data processed in the IBM SPSS software version 22.0., which uses measures of the center of data distributions and their variability for quantitative data and absolute and percentage frequencies for data qualitative. Results: Observing that the elderly population, made up of active and retired employees, shows data that points to a diversity in the lifestyles investigated. There is particular concern about eating patterns and fluid consumption, since 60 people indicated that they only eat once a day, a number equal to the number of individuals who consume just one glass of water daily. For the other variables, such as alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activity, the numbers revealed significant discrepancies between those who adopted a healthy lifestyle and the others. Final considerations: Carrying out the study among a portion of the population that has been growing every day demonstrates that care and health promotion activities must be systematically implemented and monitored, given that many elderly people have a lifestyle that is harmful to their health, which which results in preventable diseases and avoidable expenses at the levels of care in health systems.
