Trabalho de conclusão de curso (Graduação em Farmácia) - Departamento de Farmácia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2021.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/35758Passiflora edulis species, popularly known as passion fruit belongs to the Passifloraceae family and is widely used as an anxiolytic and tranquilizer. This vegetable species has two varieties: Passiflora edulis fo. edulis Sims, whose fruit has a purple color (purple passion fruit), and Passiflora edulis fo. flavicarpa Degener (yellow passion fruit). The varieties of this species are mainly due to their medicinal use, bioactive substances, reported pharmacological activities, high nutritional, functional, as well as high economic potential. In this context, the objective of this article was to carry out a review as to the potential of both varieties specifically in the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome, as well as about the safety, phytochemical data and technological applications, to provide an overview for current research and application, as well as its exploration as a new source for obtaining input for the development of herbal medicines and/or nutritional use. According to our results, both varieties have an important potential for the development of herbal medicine with therapeutic action to treat diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome, as well as a non-medicated product with a nutritional focus. Most of the studies was carried out with the flavicarpa variety, however, it is worth mentioning that there is no comparative study between these species related to the focus this work.Passiflora edulis.
