This paper gives an overview of the IEEE 802.11ah protocol discussing its condition as an alternative to the 5GMMTC use case. The main characteristics of the PHY and MAC layers are presented, as well as their corresponding implementations in the ns-3 network simulator. Finally, a demonstration of the use of ns-3 as a tool of prototyping of the systems 802.11ah is made through the display feature ahVisualizer of ns-3.
