Objective: O To analyze the risk of depression in women who survived breast cancer and to draw a comparison with a group of women without a history of the disease. Method: This is a longitudinal, retrospective cohort study, in which women diagnosed with malignant breast cancer who underwent cancer treatment were selected. The measurement of the depression outcome variable was performed through telephone contact through the question: “Have you ever been diagnosed by a medical professional of depression after breast cancer?”. The data obtained were interpreted using descriptive statistics, the dependent variable depression was categorized into: Absent and Present Depression. Results: A total of 226 women were surveyed, 133 completed or were undergoing treatment for cancer (exposed group) and 93 did not have breast cancer (unexposed group). From the application of the chi-square test, no statistically significant difference was identified (p < 0.05) in relation to the risk of developing depression in women with cancer Conclusion: Although depression was present in both groups, cancer did not increase the risk for the development of the same in women who survived breast cancer.
