Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação em Engenharia Mecânica) - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2023.1809-4791https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/53269A device was designed, built, and tested for experimental demonstrations on gas compression and rupture of samples of materials that present plastic behavior. The device consists of two tubes, one for compression and the other for gas evacuation. Gas compression is obtained through the displacement of a piston coupled to a spindle attached to a gearbox driven by an electric motor with controllable advance. At the end of the high-pressure tube is a wall with a hole where the membrane (sample of material) to be tested is installed. When the motor is activated, the spindle moves the piston inside the tube, compressing and increasing the gas pressure, which, in turn, deforms the membrane, which can lead to rupture. Suppose the maximum nominal pressure of the device is reached (more significant advance of the piston) without the membrane reaching its resistance limit. In that case, the low-pressure tube can be connected to the high-pressure one and then coupled to a vacuum pump. In this way, it is possible to increase the pressure difference, increasing the chance of rupture of the membrane. Based on fundamentals and failure criteria, a structural analysis of the device was carried out in order to determine its operational safety. Thus, it was possible to establish a relationship between the pressure and the advance of the piston inside the tube. This allowed calculating the maximum theoretical operating pressure of the device. After preliminary tests and project adjustments, three experiments were carried out using aluminized PP plastic membranes. Pressure curves were constructed as a volume function based on the data obtained. From the analysis of the experimental curves, agreement with the theoretical prediction was verified. It was concluded that the constructed device could operate safely and be used for didactic purposes (e.g., Boyle - Mariotte experiment), with the possibility of use in research on the resistance of materials.
