The watershed has concentrated rainfall in a small period of the year and a strong interanual variability pattern, characterized by the alternation between years with a rainfall rate above average, regular rainfall rate and consecutive years of rates under the average, which result in long lasting draughts and low water avaliability. In this context, the research project aimed to identify the occurence of extreme rainfall events in the semi-arid Piranhas-Açu river’s watershed. For this purpose, data from observations and interpolated data of daily precipitaton was used in a grid of spacial resolution from 0,25º x 0,25º, according to the period between 1980 and 2015. From here onwards, a grouping analysis with the intention of identifying homogeneous sub regions of precipitation was used first, which wad certifed with the Silhoutte’s method. Then the Theory of Extreme Values was applied, in order to determine in which periods and levels the possible events of extreme rainfall return. Finally the tendencies of the rainfall rates were verified. Thereby the results presented two homogeneous precipitation regions, one dry and one humid. For the levels of return studied, extremes of intense precipitation are expected to occur in the west (A3) and south (A4) of the basin. Rainfall is expected to be greater than or equal to 54 mm over a period of 10 years. While to north (A1) and central (A2), amounts exceeding 49 mm of precipitation are expected. Climatic indexes have resulted in the trend of reducing wet days in a row. As well as elevation of isolated days with rain on the basin over the basin.
