Do silenciamento à subjetividade: a perspectiva do narrador na construção da voz de Dido em Eneida e nas Heroides. 2024. 56 f. Monografia (Letras – Língua Portuguesa e Literaturas) – Centro de Ciências Humanas, Letras e Artes, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2025.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/62122This study comparatively analyzes the representation of the character Dido in Virgil's Aeneid and Ovid's Heroides, investigating how each narrator constructs the character and the impact of this construction on the perception of the female protagonist. The primary goal is to understand how the narrative strategies employed by Virgil and Ovid reflect and reconfigure the literary and cultural conventions of their time, emphasizing the tension between silencing and female agency. The research adopts a qualitative, comparative approach, grounded in feminist literary criticism methods, such as Butler's (2003) theory of gender performativity, which provides tools for understanding gender and power representation; Lerner's (2019) discussion on the historical construction of patriarchy; and Pomeroy's (1995) framework on the historical role of women in Antiquity. With a focus on narrative perspective, the study draws on Genette's (1972) concepts of narrative focalization. To contextualize Antiquity and avoid anachronisms, the research incorporates insights from Aristotle (2017), Grimal (1992), and Eliade (1972). The findings highlight significant differences in Dido's representation in both works. In the Aeneid, Virgil employs an omniscient narrator to emotionally distance Dido, situating her within the epic narrative and subordinating her to Aeneas' heroic mission and Roman ideals. This portrayal limits her autonomy, presenting her as a character marked by uncontrollable passion and eventual destruction. Conversely, in the Heroides, Ovid grants Dido her own voice, allowing her to narrate her experience in the first person, which enhances her subjectivity. In this context, Dido not only expresses her pain and suffering due to romantic abandonment but also denounces Aeneas' betrayal, transforming into a more active figure. Ultimately, the contrast between these two works reveals not only distinct literary perspectives but also a complex cultural negotiation regarding women's roles in literature and society.
